Participation and the digital divide

images (3)We may not be surprised to hear someone talking about how they access the internet, while we may be shocked when somebody tell us they do not access the internet. But it is true that there is a ‘digital divide’ which is a gap between those who can afford to use digital technologies easily and those who cannot. This is not just happen on poorer countries and richer countries, but all over the world. As we become ever more reliant on the digital world for interaction, a new gap is appearing.

Currently, the digital devices are becoming increasingly expensive as the devices are improved. What is happening now is lack of affordable broadband which creates the “divide" (Bentley.P, 2014). For example, the popular brand which is APPLE, most of the people can easily buy one or more products such as iPhone. However, some people can not afford the cost of a NOKIA cell phone. The cost of connecting to the internet has decreased in recent years but it is still a big expense for those on fixed or low incomes, therefore some people may fall behind the others who can use the digital technologies (Bentley.P, 2014).

What are we missing out on if we can not participate? Some people emphasize that there is a variety of things that we can not connect or interact unless we connect to the internet. Internet helps us to widen our world, communicate with our families who may be far away from us. As a student, digital technology helps them to engage with the world. We can not enjoy these unless we can use the technology.

There is no doubt that there are some people who can not participate in the digital world, and this problem may be worsen in years if there is no a suitable and concrete method to alleviate it.

Digital identities and digital security

images (1)   In this modern city, most of the people have their identity on the internet or any digital device, however, who do care about the digital security? Is it safe to share our details or privacy? How should we actually present ourselves on the internet? Also, we are always judged by our digital identity, so how should we be careful of our digital footprints and digital tattoos? It is very important to manage our digital identity on the information and communication technology. But how? Where to do it?

Take FACEBOOK as an example, we should manage our privacy. Do not let our posts be seen by “public" or “friends of friends", as it will be easily seen by someone we do not know, then our details will be revealed. Also, hide or delete some posts that are unwanted in order to avoid being seen or searched by others. Take INSTAGRAM as another example, we should be cautious and solemn. We may follow many accounts but be selective. What is more, we may use these media to promote ourselves but be careful of what we present on it.

Why do we need to manage our digital identity to “protect" our digital footprints and digital tattoos? As it is said above, we are always judged by our digital identity. For example, when we are going to have an interview at a business company, the superior will look at our social media in order to determine what kind of people we are. Here comes another question, why we need to be judged by our digital identity? Because no one can hide themselves on the internet, we are all “naked" on it.

THAT IS WHY WE NEED TO HAVE A MANAGED DIGITAL IDENTITY ON THE INTERNET TO AVOID THE BAD DIGITAL TATTOOS.

What is a digital world?

digital world

Some people argue that the digital world is probably an ICEBREAKER, why? Its helps people getting to communicate with others all over the world, learn new perspectives, and find friends. Many people have expressed their feeling with great satisfaction over the Internet. Information and communication are no longer limited as we are living in a global information society with digital technology (Pillay, Boulton-Lewis & Wilss, 2004). However, there are also some negative sides, such as “digital divide", the problem of “digital identity" and “digital tattoo".

Innovations and technology advances do improve the standard of life and education, so we have the new term which is “digital pedagogy". There are many kinds of media on the internet or digital device, such as blogging, iPhone, apps, which change the ways we interact with the internet such as cloud computing and eBooks. The internet has an efficient impact on how we communicate and search for information, also how we learn from the web-based resources.

When it comes to the negative sides of the digital world, it is hard to alleviate it occasionally. For example, “digital divide" is when there is an inequality in economic and social according to the differences of different classes of people  in accessing the knowledge of technologies. Some people may miss out the participation in the digital world as they don’t have the digital device because of lacking money to afford it. As a result, there may be a gap between those who have ready access to information and communication technologies and the skills os using those technology and those people who do not have the access or skills to use those same technologies. Some people may be the top of the world while the others may be the bottom of the world.

Technology is becoming an increasingly pervasive force in nowadays. It’s time to get used to it!!GOOOOOOOOO!!
